Stand Up. Speak Out. Act Now.
Silence allows abuse and misogyny to persist. We all share the responsibility to challenge unacceptable behaviour – we can’t just sit back and assume someone else will.
How to be an ACTIVE bystander:
- Notice – Spot harmful words, actions or situations
- Recognise – Understand it’s a problem, even if the person being targeted stays silent.
- Feel Empowered – Take responsibility to do something.
- Have the Skills – Intervene safely.
How do I intervene safely?
- Direct – Call out the behaviour calmly: explain what was said/done, how it made you feel, and what needs to stop e.g. “I really don’t like sexist jokes, I think they are offensive, please don’t make them anymore”
- Distract – Change the subject or interrupt.
- Check In – Ask the person targeted if they’re okay, do they need help
- Seek Help – If you don’t feel safe to intervene, then get support from someone else e.g. staff or authorities. If you think someone is at immediate risk of harm then call 999
- Report – Inform your employer, the venue or relevant authority.
Remember: Your safety matters. If you can’t act directly, you can still make a difference by seeking help or reporting.
