Gingerbread House Team Challenge Project for Year 10 Students

Aug 5, 2021 | News

This year Safe in Sussex and Brighton Cakes partnered up to offer St Oscar Romero Catholic Secondary School in Worthing a team Challenge of getting the Year 10 Students to plan and design a Gingerbread House for the year 7’s to build and decorate for Safe in Sussex’s Gingerbread House Decorating event in December this year.

Safe in Sussex has had 3 annual Gingerbread House Decorating events so far, this year they are hoping to show off as many Gingerbread houses as possible to the public, so watch this space for more information. Fay Millar from Brighton Cakes (soon to be Gingerbread World) has been supplying the gingerbread House packs for Safe in Sussex since they started the event.

Fay Millar said “I’ve been blown away by the creativity of the year 10 students. They really listened to the instructions given, created their own gingerbread houses and plans to teach others how to make them and came up with some amazing designs.

They showed initiative and flair and I can’t wait to see how the year 7s so when it comes to bringing the winning design to life.”

Phil Dean, Extended Learning Leader for St Oscar Romero said “We are so pleased that Safe in Sussex and the Gingerbread World joined forces and allowed our Year 10 to plan some designs for the Houses. The Year 10 students worked as project teams with the support of the partners. They were in competition with each other, and the winning team’s House design will be used at the event in December. The students that were in the winning team were Emma, Triston, Hattie and Callaghan. I think it is so important that young people have the opportunity to support local charities and causes. It is also really important that they can develop their employability and lifelong skills.”

Deb West the Corporate & Community Fundraiser that originated the Gingerbread House events for Safe in Sussex said “We are delighted and thankful that our Gingerbread House event is growing with schools now taking part.  It will help raise much needed funds and awareness of the vital work Safe in Sussex does to end domestic abuse in our community.”
